Charts — Positioning the title, key and labels

The chart’s title, its key (legend), and the "last updated" label can be positioned directly on the chart while editing, in much the same way as people and families. Their text and whether they appear at all are set in the Chart Properties panel; their placement can be adjusted on the chart itself.

Selecting an element

In editing mode, click the title, the key, or the "last updated" label. A highlighted box appears around it, with small grey buttons. While one of these elements is selected, the usual person and family buttons are hidden; click any person to return to normal editing.

Jumping to a position

Lettered buttons sit just outside the box at the compass points:

• N, S, E, W snap the element to the top, bottom, right or left.
• NE, SE, SW, NW snap it to a corner.

This is the quickest way to move an element a long way. The "last updated" label supports positioning only — the nudge and size controls below apply to the title and key.

Nudging

The small arrow buttons just inside the box edge nudge the element a short distance in that direction — < and > move it left and right, the up and down arrows move it vertically. Nudging switches the element to a custom position, so you can pick a compass point first and then fine-tune from there. The arrow keys do the same while an element is selected.

Size and columns

• For the title, the - and + buttons (just outside the box) make the title text smaller or larger.
• For the key, the - and + buttons change the number of columns the key items are arranged in.

More options

Right-click a selected element for a menu with the full set of choices:

• Title — every anchor position (including the in-between NNE and NNW), font-size presets, a Curved title toggle, and the choice of Ornament: a flourish either side of the lettering, a ribbon banner drawn behind it, or none. The ribbon banner suits a curved title as well as a straight one, arching to follow it; the flourish is for straight titles only. Some chart styles are too plain for a flourish and leave it off, but a ribbon banner is drawn whenever you ask for one.
• Key — every anchor position (including Below title and the tight variants), the number of columns, and Hide key.
• Last updated label — its anchor position.

The key only appears when Include key is switched on. If you hide it from the chart, switch it back on from the Chart Properties panel.
